While women play a very important role in fishing, they face serious structural problems due to gender discriminations in the sector, like the perception of fishing as a “male profession” in society.
The livelihoods of thousands, depend on fishing in Turkey. In the fisheries sector, as in most sectors, women are not visible in official records, and they are not equal in rights or wages. A gender equality approach is very important in solving the problems of fisheries sector.
The reasons of the discrimination and the misrepresentation of women in decision-making are worth an in-depth research. Gender equality is not the solution for all the challenges which fisheries face; however, women in fisheries must be recognized for the sustainable use of the marine and coastal resources and the future of the fisheries sector, and our own future.
As WOMEN IN FISHERIES SOCIETY, we are working to improve the negative conditions of women fishers in our country so that they can act together and get stronger together. Thus, we believe that with an organized structure, they can gain political weight and be noticed by decision makers and make their voices heard.
The studies on women in fisheries started with Dr.Huriye Göncüoğlu’s master’s thesis in 2007. The academic work has been improved by the involvement of the civil society organizations namely the Underwater Research Society and Mediterranean Conservation Society since 2010.
We built a Women Fishers Commission (2017) under the umbrella of Turkey’s largest fishers cooperative, which did not previously accept female members, The involvement of the civil society organization in the topic led to many national and international successes. These works led to the formation of an independent entity on March 8, 2019, becoming a non- profit society.
WOMEN IN FISHERIES SOCIETY was established by women from various occupations; namely fisherwomen, academicians, biologists, political scientist, aquaculture experts, ecosystem and planning experts, in 2019.
The SOCIETY also works for;
In addition to this, the society also aims to carry out various activities such as advocacy training and communication activities to protect marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as to conduct research, produce and share information in various fields of nature conservation and gender.
WOMEN IN FISHERIES SOCIETY works for gender equality, protection of the marine and coastal ecosystems and assets protected, sustainable development of marine economic sectors and believes that a livable world is possible through co-existence.
As of 2019, WOMEN IN FISHERIES SOCIETY will act on a national and international scale as a non-governmental organization contributing to nature conservation, sustainable development and gender equality, and adopts the principles of transparency, accountability, responsibility, justice and equality within the framework of ethical values while adhering to these principles.
